I'm getting peafowl, but NEED answers to these questions!

Sick peafowl will often stand with their head and neck drawn in, tail down, wings droopy and feathers fluffed. Sick ones will usually refuse their favorite treats, too. Often by the time people notice it's too late and the pea will die, so it's very important to learn to recognize the signs early and to have a well stocked first aid kit. Probably also a good idea to find a vet that will see peafowl.

Will the peahens be good mothers or do they not do to well with babies?

Why wouldn't they be good mothers?

Peahens are great mothers, the tricky part is getting them to go broody. If they are penned up they seem to not go broody like free ranging ones do. I have some that are over 10 yrs old and have never sat on a clutch of eggs. I end up taking the eggs for incubating or slipping them under a hen that is broody.

I have a two year old hen that is due tomorrow, she is in a pen with about ten other birds and I am thinking of taking the babies to protect them. I would rather she got to raise them. She did have an enclosed coop to set in, we were worried that it might too hot for her in there but the weather has cooperated and it has been nice.

If you are going to take them do it as soon as they hatch , they stress so terribly bad if you wait a day or two, and getting them to eat becomes very difficult especial if their mom has already showed them a day or two i have found this to be true with both guinea keets and pea chicks here.

Do you think they would be in danger form the rest of the peas? I am going to be reducing numbers in that pen but not until the end of the month.
