I'm going crazy! Young rooster crows for hours! Help!

Have you done anything about him, yet?
No, simply because he is so beautiful and I really do want to try to hatch a few eggs out this spring..... God help me!

He crows progressively earlier and earlier every day!

I somehow manage to sleep through him every once in a while, but I'm usually up by 5, as he persists all morning long. And get this, last night a deer he back yard and scared him and he crowed for about 20 minutes last night at around 11:00!!! I almost did him in then......

Eat him lol

If it wasn't for the whole needing him to mate with my girls and all I'd have already eaten him!

If your coop has windows letting in a bunch of light, that's probably triggering him to sound off early. Some curtains would most likely help. You could also stack some bales of hay against the wall closest to your house to help insulate against the sound.

A curtain for the door might actually help......

my roster whom we renamed Frank, crows mostly in the morning, by afternoon he seems to be to busy taking care of his ladies while they are all free ranging in different directions...:) Even when i keep them all penned up by noon he seems to not crow to much, maybe once an hour or two... He usually starts about 6 am when he hears me outside the coop putting fresh water out and opening up the coop for them ( even though its still pretty dark, he's an early riser) He then seems to crow at everything or everyone as my daughter heads off to the bus..:) im beginning to think hes a guard chicken as well:) after everyone seems to have left or things seattle back down, hes usually crowing about once an hour, till afternoon like i said..

If he only crowed once an hour, it would be one thing. He literally crows for 2+ hours every morning, starting around 5:00 now, NONSTOP. In July, when its starting to get light out by 4:00, I am going to lose my mind!
From what I've learned, he won't stop. Time to take him to the processor and make some dumplins.

Oy! Thinking about it!

hi,
i had one just like that ! horrible.. he never shut up- and it never got better.
so i exchanged him for a Hen :)
good luck on this one

Thanks much. I think after I set a few eggs I'll haul him off to the auction and see if I can get a couple of bucks for him. He's a big pretty fellow. Certified and SQ. I'd adore him if he'd shut the heck up!

He might settle down a bit around 1 year as his testosterone levels off. I had one that did that. Believe it or not, we just got used to it!

Are you raising some particular breed of chicks to sell? If not, why do you need him? If you just want a roo, there are PLENTY on the 'free to a good home' sections of the forum - many purebreds.
If you just want to raise chicks for more laying hens, it sounds like it would be worth the money to just buy them instead of trying to hatch them. And, I'm sure you know, the hens don't need him for egg laying.
I got a surprise roo from last year's spring chicks. He's been a bit of a test off and on with his attitude - but his crowing hasn't been a problem. He has a rather nice, mellow voice. I'm hoping that with 2 more adult hens on the way soon, and more spring chicks coming before too long (unless he gets REAL bad) he will soon be old enough to settle down a little and be too busy to bother with his antics.
