Are you raising some particular breed of chicks to sell? If not, why do you need him? If you just want a roo, there are PLENTY on the 'free to a good home' sections of the forum - many purebreds.
If you just want to raise chicks for more laying hens, it sounds like it would be worth the money to just buy them instead of trying to hatch them. And, I'm sure you know, the hens don't need him for egg laying.
I got a surprise roo from last year's spring chicks. He's been a bit of a test off and on with his attitude - but his crowing hasn't been a problem. He has a rather nice, mellow voice. I'm hoping that with 2 more adult hens on the way soon, and more spring chicks coming before too long (unless he gets REAL bad) he will soon be old enough to settle down a little and be too busy to bother with his antics.
I know I don't need him specifically, but I would like his particular bloodline and breed for a specific pair of hens I have. I have a beautiful pair of barnyard cross (mutts) hens that I would like to hatch off from and since buff orpington isn't a dominant gene when crossed, I'm hoping the chicks will look like the hens. And this roo is heritage lineage and drop-dead beautiful, so I am after his DNA for sure. I personally hate roosters in general since I am a light sleeper! I had hopes that he would mellow out with age, but he crows worse every day. *sigh* I am almost ready to do away with him anyway, but my husband just adores him. They get along well. And he wants to hatch from him and our mutts too. Oh how I hate this rooster!
