I'm going crazy! Young rooster crows for hours! Help!

Are you raising some particular breed of chicks to sell? If not, why do you need him? If you just want a roo, there are PLENTY on the 'free to a good home' sections of the forum - many purebreds.
If you just want to raise chicks for more laying hens, it sounds like it would be worth the money to just buy them instead of trying to hatch them. And, I'm sure you know, the hens don't need him for egg laying.
I got a surprise roo from last year's spring chicks. He's been a bit of a test off and on with his attitude - but his crowing hasn't been a problem. He has a rather nice, mellow voice. I'm hoping that with 2 more adult hens on the way soon, and more spring chicks coming before too long (unless he gets REAL bad) he will soon be old enough to settle down a little and be too busy to bother with his antics.

I know I don't need him specifically, but I would like his particular bloodline and breed for a specific pair of hens I have. I have a beautiful pair of barnyard cross (mutts) hens that I would like to hatch off from and since buff orpington isn't a dominant gene when crossed, I'm hoping the chicks will look like the hens. And this roo is heritage lineage and drop-dead beautiful, so I am after his DNA for sure. I personally hate roosters in general since I am a light sleeper! I had hopes that he would mellow out with age, but he crows worse every day. *sigh* I am almost ready to do away with him anyway, but my husband just adores him. They get along well. And he wants to hatch from him and our mutts too. Oh how I hate this rooster!

If you want to keep him at least until he mates your hens you can catch him at night when he goes to roost and put him in a box inside your house with a duvet and a pillow on the top the lower the roof of the box the less likely he will be to crow and the darkness and lack of noise should subdue him at least until a reasonable hour maybe 8am? I did this once with a roo until he fertilised my hens, a bit of hassle for a few weeks but it did stop him waking the neighbours up at 4am with his incessant crowing he did however, go to town with the crowing once he was let out at 8! the neighbours still weren't happy so once he had done the deed I butchered him :( I 'd imagine they do calm down as they get older I have never kept one long enough to find out, it is far too residential here, if you don't have any immediate neighbours you should be ok but I guess he is annoying you so it's your call!

Spike, no neighbors to bother, just me! The husband can sleep through ANYTHING so it doesn't bother him. Bringing him in at night might actually work---I hadn't thought of that. I put up a curtain over the coop door this morning, so I'm going to see how that works tomorrow. If not, I might move him on in!

I have the same issue we have two Japanese Bantam roos that are good buds. They will go at it and crow and crow and crow trying to see how is the loudest. We laugh when they really get to going. We live in the country and our neighbors are a good distance away but they can still hear these little guy. We had a neighbor come over and see them saying "Those little guys make all that racket? We can hear them a half mile away!"

I'd get a use kitchen cabinet to put in side the coop and put him in at night and let him out around 10 in the morning. if the cabinet is not tall enough for him to stretch his neck he won't crow. Plus make it as dark as possible.

Oh my roo is so kool he wakes us up and shuts the hell up lol and he's beautiful oh did I say he's really quiet and peaceful love him lmao

is the valium for me or this rooster?

no, seriously I tried ear plugs and they irritated the stew out of me!

Whichever works best. How about both?
