I currently have 4 pullets that are about to turn one. Just got a deal to rent the barn behind my house. It has a coop set up in it already with an attached 1/2 acre run.

I jumped in today with both feet. I ordered 30 chicks from Purely Poultry. 5 Dominique, 7 EE's, 5 Buff Orpingtons, 5 Cinnamon Queens, 4 GLW, 4 SLW. I expect I will get the chicks in early April.

I can't wait. I think it will pretty a pretty flock. What do you think? I would love to add some blue laced red wyandottes to the group or maybe some welsummers.

Is it possible to get chicks from 2 different hatcheries and put them together?

Would that be too dangerous disease wise?

If I brooded them separately, how far apart in age could they be and still go into the coop together?

Man I have chicken fever bad!!!!

Thanks,

Liz

TOLD YA!!! We told ya that you would get the chicken fever - it is a hopeless addiction!

That is a big, colorful flock. I have 34 4-5 week old pullets that are quickly outgrowing the brooder space and need to be out in the coop ASAP!

A couple of things that I have learned here at BYC... 1) You always need MORE space (brooder/coop/breeding/etc.) and 2) those birds grow FAST!! mine have nearly tripled in the time I've had them (since 2/19). Dust is everywhere in the spare bedroom, too. Plan for a lot of cleaning.

After that, have a ball 'cause they are hilariously funny!!

Last year I got chicks from 3 different feed stores and they came from different hatcheries. Even some of the from one feed store were from multiple hatcheries. I put them all in the same brooder and had no issues. I picked them up at various times (as particular breeds came into the stores) over a 3 week period. I did not quarantine any of them or separate because of age.

This year I am getting 25 chicks from 2 or 3 feed stores and a local breeder. I am expecting them all during the same week this time. I plan to put them all together in a single brooder. (Building the brooder is 1st on my to-do list for this coming weekend.)

If you are going to stick your feet in, you may as well get wet all the way up to your knees!!!! Sound like you are like the rest of us!!! We always say,,,"Just a few more!"

You guys are driving me crazy! My hubby just came from the local Rural King and they have baby chicks! He thought I might like to go there on my lunch hour - no way! I would never get out alone. I just do not have any more room. I have hens almost two years old and a tiny coop with Bantams and just no more room! Does the desire for "more" ever go away. I would just about kill for more chicks right now. Dang this addiction!
