So, I pick up my 3 chicks from our local Farm Supply on Friday and have ordered a pre-built chicken coop from Chickensaloon.com.
I'm so excited and have been all over this website getting as much information as I can before their arrival. I'm using a large dog crate as a brooder (took the top off). The forum is a wonderful source of information and sharing. This is the first time I've raised chickens and will raise them as egg layers only! Look forward to keeping you all updated and will post baby photos soon!

Welcome to BYC!

Those dog crates make excellent brooders! Make sure to cover the sides to keep the drafts down. I also like them because you can put in a 2x4, 2 side up, as a roost bar and get them started roosting by 2 weeks old! Makes an easy transition to the coop knowing how to roost.

If you need any tips and hints on raising your new brood, stop by our learning center here on BYC for lots of good reads on all the aspects of keeping poultry...
