I'm going to die in the heat!!! Portable vs window AC?

i have a window shaker in the bedroom for the wife. I spent all summer in the texas heat growing up. I was as brown as a coffee bean back in the days, and 100 degree heat was nothing......................... fast forward 20 years

100 degree heat here in michigan also mean 85% humidity. I'm good till the humidity goes up then I go into the bedroom if I start to get over heated. Doc also said the meds I'm on also lowers my ability to stand high temps.

Last summer I was down at my ma's house in Waxahachie Texas working on a van. 112 degrees laying down on the blacktop. Almost had to call an ambulance for me

80-85 degrees, not so bad as long as I have a strong fan working on me.

Some of us are wired for heat, some are wired for cool..............

Some folks like boyd have their wires crossed in all aspects and manners in life... so be happy your not me

I've lived in Oregon for 30 years (25 in Portland and almost 5 on the dry, high desert side of the Cascades) and I've never had A/C - whole-house fans, yes; HEPA filters, yes. Spend the money you would spend on A/C units on better insulation, better windows (both of those offer tax benefits, too, which buying A/C doesn't) and exterior shades for south-facing glass.

Edit - sorry, I see by your second post that you are renting. If your choice is between window units and free-standing units, really window units would be the only way to go. You'll have to choose a space to condition (like a bedroom with a door) because the window units aren't good for anything but small spaces. Also, a swamp cooler WILL work in the Willamette Valley in summer, but they tend to be bulky and hard to install.

Gosh, I was all get out miserable and laying under the ceiling fan with a floor stand on me in wet clothes trying to get cool, and here is my SO getting into bed for the night and not only does he pull up ALL the sheets up to his nose, he hugs a pillow on top of it all AND falls asleep comfortably!!

Some people sure are wired to tolerate hot... I'm most certainly not one of them! I like cold weather becuase if you're cold, you can always put more clothes on, when it's hot, there is only so much to take off.

I might juts have to get a floor unit for the portability. It's just tough to decide since I only can budget for one and not both.

We rent here. We'd never buy a place like we are renting. All windows are double paned and we have 8 neighbors against walls or corners.

Back home in Washington we have a custom built house with all the extras and goodies energy efficiency in mind. It's not a problem there.

I vote window unit and quickly. Early on (45 yrs ago) I discerned that the Princess does not handle heat well and immediately bought a window unit for the bedroom. Trust me it was a necessity. We now have central air which I fought but now love. Go figure.
