I am going to order some Freedom Ranger chicks, and set my incubator for a hatch at around the same time that they should be arriving. (As in, the hatchery hatches every Wednesday, so I will set my incubator to hatch the same day as the chicks, I'm ordering) DH says, "You might as well load it up!" I plan on getting 3 dozen Freedom Rangers, and my incubator will hold 42 eggs with the egg turner. The best hatch rate I've ever had was just over 50%, so I'm not too worried about being overwhelmed with chickens. I plan on butchering all the extra roosters. I would like to keep about a dozen FR pullets and a cockerel to give me more next year. Grand plans - we'll see how they all turn out. :) I think I just got bit by spring/chicken fever.

What a good honey you have!

I know what you mean about the chick fever! My order isn't getting here until mid-May, and it's killing me. I go to the Grange and just stare at the bins of chicks. I whisper broody thoughts to my hens, I offer them treats or babies or, heck, a gold leg band if they'd just GO BROODY already! No takers so far......I'm plotting to make an incubator and start hatching, you know to test the incubator and be sure it works ok

Enjoy your chicks, hope your flock overwinters well and you get babies next spring.
