I wouldn't shoot it...My cat got lost on opening hunting day...if you have any idea how that feels...
My dog killed all but 1 of my chickens, I was angry of course but I never got it in my head to shoot the darn thing. Instead Im selling him..
Anyways, maybe you could shoot over its head? two random dogs showed up at my dads and my dad shot over their heads adn they never came back again..so yah

Everyone is allowed their own opinion.
My birds are put up in the coop, they can't enjoy their daily free rangin' time because of that dog. I have to go buy more fencing to expand their yard now so that they aren't cooped up all the time. Yeah part of it is my fault for not completely fencing in the yard, but that dog will not get another chance at them. I have 5 1/2 acres that the chickens love to roam on. I can't afford to fence all that in just yet, but I will. Part of it is fenced now, we are slowly making progress on it. Fenceing is expensive, especially predator proof fencing. The dog had its chance. It better not come back, that's all I have to say.

I hope when you sell him you tell the new owners that he's a chicken killer so it doesn't become someone else's problem on down the road.

I have neighbors that let their wolf x run because they live in the country now. Those animals used to run my cows and goats and tried digging the rabbits out of their pen too. I talked to them, eventually got animal control out and all I ever heard was that they're just playing, won't really hurt anything, and if the dogs did cause damage they would make it right

. They actually expected me to just stand around while their 140lb + hybrids chased my stock all over the field and into the fences. I tried to be a good neighbor and give them a chance to be responsible, but nothing changed until I made it clear that the next time I caught those animals running my stock it would be the last. They still think I'm mean and evil, but at least they keep their animals off our property.

Point is I think it's nice to give folks a chance to do right, but be prepared to take action yourself because some people just don't get the concept of responsible dog ownership.

Best of luck (either way) with the problem pooch.

Yes animals sometimes get out. kooltex didn't shoot the dog the first time. If the dog comes back kooltex said he would shoot it. How many times is it fine to let a dog loose on your property killing your chickens? Once is my opinion. The first time the dog will be run off my property and if there is owners they will be notified. The second time, well it had it's chance. What if there was a little child out collecting eggs when this had happened. Even if you were 2 feet from the child, if the dog went for a hen in the path of the child...
Where do you draw the line is all I am saying.

Right on! I just so happen to have a 1 year old that will soon be learning to collect eggs.

Congrads on the 1 year old. I have a 1 year old too, and she loves watching the birds. I feel very strongly about your post. Hope your little one can enjoy your birds in piece in the future.
Good luck

A roaming dog can travel a long way. It could live miles away. Don't be surprised when it comes back. And don't be surprised when an owner is looking for it. Personally, I would file a report with the Sheriff's Dept so there is evidence of a history of attacks. That way nobody can complain about it being shot. It may also help you get restitution if the owner ever turns up. It might get them a big fat fine too.

I truly hate ignorant owners that let their dogs roome loose. Its a danger whether people want to accept it or not.

What if the dog attacks a child or even an adult?
What if someone is driving around and tries to avoid hitting the dog and crashes?
What if the dog kills someones precious pet ? They may be chickens but we put a heck of alot of
money and effort in raising them.

People always say " well you should get a better fence"... Last time I checked, dogs jump and dig very well
and if they see something they want, they will do everything possible to get to it. I'm not going to put
up a 6ft chain link fence with bobwire on top and wire buried in the ground to keep someones mutt away
from my livestock and property.

People just don't THINK

We have dealed with dogs before and if the dog is caught on the property the first time- The owners are notified and warned
If the dog is caught in the act of killing, he WILL be shot. plain and simple

If MY dog was caught running or killing someone Else's animals... More power to them to shoot the dog. It would be my fault that the dog was loose and I would pay for the damages.
