Im hatching eggs from my Frost white legbars & white silkie roo cross. Anyone interested to come along for the ride and see how the chicks turn out?

Good morning. The chicks are doing very well. The one that hatched last though, ive noticed its legs keep sliding apart to the sides. It is smaller than the others but very spunky. But stays under the the heater most of the time. I read online this leg splaying can be corrected if you can keep the legs in the proper position for 24 to 48 hours. Im going to try that.

So, after trying to come up with something for her leg issue..I used a pipe cleaner from my craft box to contruct a kind of handcuff thing to put around her ankles to keep her legs from spreading apart. Shes actually standing up alot more now and although tripping alot, she comes out from under the heater a little. Heres a couple pictures. I hope it corrects the splaying legs. Ill keep it on for 48 hours and see.

I am happy to report that my little contraption for her legs really worked! I have removed it and she is scampering around like nothing ever happened.

So it has been just over a week. Here are some pictures. Its hard to say if theyre male or female. Theres still really no sign of a comb yet. Except one looks like its going to have a regular comb like the mom and probably the rest will have silkie combs. Ill post new photos in about a week.

First day outside for my babies! So its extremely hard to tell if they are boys or girls. I managed to get a few up close photos of their combs. Im hoping to get anybodys guesses. Only one has a regular comb, some have a flat dark area, some have a flatish yellow area. They all got their first feathers in extremely quickly. Two have feathers on the legs.

Heres the one with a regular comb. I cant be quick to call it a male because in my last batch of chicks i had a huge chuck with a prominent comb that i swore was a male, but turned out to be the most beautiful female.

They were scared to come out at first. By the way,. I just use my old rabbit cage just for things like this. It wont be their permanent home. Ita perfect for injured chickens too that need a separation while they heal.

The chicks are five weeks now. Im sure at least one is probably a rooster because of the comb, but im still not sure about the others. They are all white now and all have cute little crests. I do think theyll be attractive birds. But i can barely wait to find out whos a roo and whos a hen.
