Hi, Theresa, that's good news about Snoopy; that was too touch and go for comfort. Glad all six of the chicks are doing well. Starting today I'm incubating 24 for a friend of my son; they went to Center Grove together. Of those 12 chicks that I have, I'm going to separate the young roosters tomorrow and put them in one of the barn pens until I'm 100% sure that they're roosters. Also, a black broody hen that I thought was setting ten dead eggs (after her leaving them in the cold) actually hatched four babies five days ago, a black, two blues, and a splash; they're really cute, and it's fun to watch the hen and them together. My splash rooster seems proud and overly interested in them; he's really an ideal rooster.
I put out that permanent asparagus bed about ten years ago; that's why its row is not numbered. It's about 66 feet long and three feet wide. It feeds us, the neighbors, friends, and all our relatives. As long as you put LOTS of manure under where you're going to plant it the first year, the bed will last forever. I started off with a truck load of buried horse manure. I try to replenish the soil with leaf mold, additives, and miscellaneous nutrients as much as I can.
