Hmm...I'm in Putnam County, 15 minutes from Dutchess. Then there's Ulster County, right?

well, i don't know when i'll get the chicks.
i was planning on getting them from agway, but after reading all the posts here, i may try to go through these boards, or maybe even craigs list.
my hesitation is due to the fact that i have wanted these little critters for so long, i want everything to work out well (and for my husband to enjoy this experience too)!
siting the coop is a major topic of conversation, and they i have to get working on it.
our house has been under a slow renovation for years (add a wedding, two kids and some parties along the way) so we have a fair pile of 'leftover' wood and supplies to work with.
i am planning a dirt floor, deep litter method coop, and i want it close enough to the house so that a garden hose can reach in the summer, and i can haul water in the winter without slipping down off our hill too bad!
plus being able to defend my bitties with shotgun if necessary. (hawks, varmints etc) not planning on shoot to kill the hawks, just shoot to scare the poop out of!
that's the general plan,
and louloubean was a nickname a dear friend gave me years ago, llbean works too i guess, but since my name is lou, the former works better!
