Aloha everyone! I've raised chickens for years and I'm just joining this forum now. Mainly because I want to start raising some silkies. I know that they're a little different from bigger layers, and I'm here to learn! I stay on Kauai, so I don't really have to ever worry about the cold! Looking forward to upcoming discussions!

Hiya, and welcome to BYC! :frow I've been raising solely silkies for about the past 8 years or so. You'll love 'em!

If you have any questions about them, just ask!
I'm picking up three silkie chicks at the end of the month, And I know they're a little different than the larger laying breeds. I know that medicated Kickstarter is not good for them, and then I think they need higher protein starter feed too. What do you start out feeding your Silkie chicks? A non-medicated starter? With like 20% protein? Any brands you may recommend?

I had been using Kalmbach's starter, but just today switched them over the Kalmbach's Flock Maker. That's 20% protein and is for chicks all the way up to 8 months or so, whenever they start laying eggs.

I use medicated for two weeks if I ever buy chicks from somewhere else, but try to get them outside asap which helps give them immunities too.
