i'm new - might need help

i found an add in the paper about some guy selling chickens, i went there and bought 4. The guy that was selling them was pretty old and cantankerous (suspect WWII vet). He said he had RIR's domineckers (not sure what those are) and leghorns.

I think the ones i got are RIR's - i don't have pics yet - but I can link pics that look like them.

my questions are ---
how can i figure out how old they are?
how can i figure out the sex?


the biggest one looks like this - but it has a few tail feathers.

2 look like this -- one is a little more golden than the other

and the 4th looks like this

I appreciate the information - i think i have spent a solid 8 hours in 2 days on this website.

are there any good articles on sexing RIR's that you could point me towards?

the old guy said I could tell the pullets from the roo's by the presence or lack of tail feathers at their age --- but I have also seen references to checking the color of their combs.
