Hello everyone!
I'm a highschooler whose been wanting quails (and chickens and ducks and every other poultry) for ages, and finally found out I can keep Coturnix quails so I got some. I'm in a suburban area that's not rural zoned so nothing else for now.
I have four quails that are 2 weeks old and I'm going to ask the quail section if they think they can figure out the gender of the quail yet, or if I really do have to wait until they are 3 or 4 weeks.
I've been reading a bunch of posts without an account for about four weeks now since I finally decided to get quails and I love how informative they are.
This is my quail setup so far:
Without the cat though.
I made it out of some cheap wood for Lowe's and some cheap mosquito net, since they are going to be inside behind closed doors so nothing should be able to get to them. I put a basil plant in there in case they get hungry but they don't seem to realize they could eat it. There's also two pots I put in Incase they want a cave of sorts but I haven't seen them use either. Oh and of course the sandbox with some store bought beach sand and some ash from a recent fire, but I have to figure out a way to clean it since the sand doesn't soft very well and they spend so much time in it that it has a (small) amount of poop. The whole enclosed is about 6 feet by 4 inches, and I made it to be able to take the whole too off to get inside, but I'm still trying to figure out a good way to actually open it partially. I did make a little Velcro powered opening on one end for quick changes.
I think my quail colors are pearl feel (female???), tuxedo pharaoh (maybe male I see a bit of red???), regular pharaoh (female???), and then a grey one which I got no idea the specific gene/color (maybe male but I'm really hoping for a female!)
(Back and front of each quail in this order: Pearl fee, pharaoh, grey, pharaoh tuxedo)
Anyway, thats my introduction!
