Hi all, my name is Dawn, i am new to having chickens, but not really new to this group, you see i have been a member for 4 years, (yes and i am just now getting to this...LOL) i got my Chickens, i have had them for about a month, and they are so sweet. they will eat out of your hand. My son is autistic and this is helping him so much, every morning and every after noon and every night, he runs out to look for eggs, we are getting 4-6 eggs out of 12 chickens, i didnt think that was bad.

I just want you all to know i may not have said any thing for 4 years, but i was reading and learning before i made the decision to take the plunge.
than you all for the info you put out there, now i am going to ask a question, we had an issue last night, here is the story,

we live in florida and it was getting cold so we went to the store and got hay for them because i wanted them to be warm, we filled the coop with it and it was great for a week. then this morning we came out and 3 of them are bleeding at the base of the tail. the only think we could figure out is they were peeking each other, well today we moved the hurt ones to a dog kennel with a tarp roof and put a nesting box in there, we tarped 2 walls of it. but my question is can any one tell me what happened? I mean we were all good till last night.

Hello there and welcome back to BYC! :frow

I am not sure what would have caused all the bleeding at the base of the tails. 3 of them were bleeding? Sounds like something was trying to get them overnight. Were they sleeping out in the run? Something may have tried to reach its paws in and grab them. Pecking usually happens to one bird and over time. Not overnight. Make sure every hole, every space is plugged. Use 1/4 or 1/2 inch hardware cloth on runs. No chicken wire, its way to flimsy.

Good luck and welcome to our roost! :)

Hope you enjoy even more time actually in the community! :D

They could have got attacked by a fox or they pecked each other fighting for food or water my chickens will peck each other if one chickens been in a box to long and they want that box could have the hay cut them not to sure hope I help.
If they got attacked by a fox all of the chickens would have been dead, I know first hand what those da**ed foxes can do.
