I would say anything but scratch....

If you have never given them grit, then they are unable to digest it at all. I have seen people (and I use the term loosely) give little chicks scratch and it blocks up their digestive tract and they die a slow and painful death.

I would go for oatmeal, fruit or bread.

I give mine yogurt, cooked oatmeal,pasta,scrambled eggs etc. You can just put layer pellets in blender and they will become chick feed very quickly. Or a coffee grinder.
