I saw the reflection of the two ambulatory ones going after the weaker ones. Figured they were hungry so hauled my carcass off the couch and moved them to the brooder.

So that's 44 chicks in the brooder right now.

If anyone was wondering if the chick they picked hatched or not...

I went thru the egg shells i cleaned out today and got as many numbers as I could. There were at least a half dozen where the chick zipped thru the section of shell I wrote the number on so I couldnt tell what it was tho.

Is it safe to write on the shells with a fine tip sharpie? The pencil was hard to see a lot of the time on the mottled quail shells.

I use a sharpie on mine, but they seem to aim for it when they pip. I can rarely make out the numbers

I do have better success when i number/mark the the rounded end of the egg instead of the side

The problem is there's not a lot of surface area on a quail shell...chances of where ever you write the number getting hit are pretty good regardless.
