I received two mandarin ducklings (the ones that are my avatar) about a month ago. One was always growing faster than the other one and stepping all over it. Today the smaller one just sits with its wings out and its legs back and wont walk, it just scoots all around, its about to die. The other one looks normal, fully feathered and healthy. I called the people today that I got them from and they asked me to send pics. I did and then called back. Their son said the parents had gone out to eat and he didnt know when they would come back....so I waited. About 5 minutes later I got a call from the lady and right away she started yelling about how I cant return it because it will affect their whole flock...this I understand. She also tried to blame it on me that they didnt get enough sun or minerals from the grass...yeah right...i explained our whole setup which would make anything like that impossible. She also said that I could have returned them if I would have called a week after I got them because I should have noticed it by then...even though it just started limping about a week ago.....the man that sold them to me seemed nice but I now realize that they aren't very good to deal with...I hate to post their website...but I dont want anyone else going through this....

I just cant believe people will be like this...

a month after purchase, what are you wanting the seller to do for you exactly?

of course you cannot return it. that is poor biosecurity. most of us that sell poultry would not accept an animal back to our premises.

it is too bad that the animal is failing, but it is way beyond the seller's responsibility at this point. maybe if it was within 72 hours of purchase etc, but there is no telling how, what, when, where, etc.

It sucks to have an animal that doesn't do well for whatever reason, but this isn't necessarily their fault and they can't be held liable for the life of the animal. Part of having animals is that bad things sometimes happen, unfortunately. I;m sure you'll treat her well in the meantime.

It really does not sound like this is the breeders fault. Even 10 days from teh day of sell could possibly be the breeders fault (for illnesses) but a month? no way. Sorry either this is a genetic issue that just showed up (still not the breeders fault in some cases) or the duckling wasnt getting something it needed.

Its hard, but i understand why the breeder cant take the baby duck back. Sorry you are going through this.

I have to agree that they can't be responsible for it after a month. It's probably something genetic that noone could have fixed, no matter when it showed up. Having said that, she should have been NICE and not tried to fault you. A little compassion goes a long way, you already knew she couldn't take it back, she could have just commisserated a bit, you know?

Sorry I agree that it's not the seller's fault. That is the chance we take when we buy a living breathing creature. Maybe she could have handled her response better too, but I'm not sure what you expected them to do about it.

It may not be the sellers fault. Sounds like it very well could be a spinal issue. (Got stepped on, fell from a high place?) However, the sellers handling of this is terrible, that's a good way to NOT get repeat or word of mouth business.
I wish you well.

It's hard to judge either response since we didn't hear the entire call. She may have been justified, or she may not have. Her reaction likely stemmed from yours. If she's in business and she jumped all over you, if you were being polite, then she won't be in business long. But if you were highly emotional, which is understandable, then you may have spoken in a way that would put the recipient on defense. I'd just back away, don't do business with them any more, and you'll both be happier.

Good luck with your baby!

I understand its nothing they did but it just makes me mad on the way they handled it and tried to lie to me saying they were out to dinner...just by that I could tell they had poor customer service. I just dont know what to do with it...i dont think it will get better. Also, I have no idea what to do with the healthy duck if the other dies....i'm just having a bad day
