I'm running out of excuses

No but seriously....I got chickens this year after all of the natural disasters, for emergency preperedness. It is logical and smart! I live in Utah where we could be frozen in the middle of winter and need fresh meat or have a huge earthquake and need to supply ourselves and others with eggs and meat. It is all in good sense! Just look what happened in Japan and all over the world! Tell this to your husband and see if he will still complain! hehehe

P.S.! This worked on my husband when I went from 4 chicks to 15!!!! And we have a regular sized back yard! LOL! Oops....

I told my husband we were raising them for eggs and meat... Um..well I have been for the eggs. This is the first year I have to make "meat"

out of them. I have extended myself a tad with more chicks. I keep promising to kill some but well you know..I love them and they each have personalities

My husband asked me..."so how many do you HAVE now?" my answer.. "um..I"m not sure really I'll have to go count but I know they will all fit, I"m planning on killing a few for the freezer this year" it satisfied him but then my sister asked and I said.."um..I think 25..(mental count) yeah 25...you could easily fit that many in your coop or maybe more!...but start with 10"
I know she will be just like me and become addicted so that will give her room.

After thinking and thinking about this, my current plan is to sell a few on craigslist, buy feathers
at Hobby Lobby to throw around the yard and 4 dressed supermarket birds and make the best
roast chicken ever. That should convince the family we need more chickens. We really only need about
4 hens tops for eggs. It's just so hard to justify the ever increasing
population, especially the loaded incubator in the laundry room, but I'm still not ready to take the BIG
step. My next little step is to try to make a homemade whiz bang feather plucker. There's only one
way to test it out.

Processing is not so bad after the first one and they taste so much better than store bought birds.
I don't count access boys growing toward freezer camp. I only count layers and breeders. Bantam is only half a chicken so it takes 2 to 3 to equal a regular chicken.

I keep thinking I'm going to process a few roos, but so far I keep getting very cute
well behaved fun roos that are extra friendly and entertaining. The one bad
roo is a lavender ameraucana with perfect features I can't bring myself to cook. I really
do want to taste the legendary delicious sweet meat of my Dorkings, but wouldnt
you know it, the one I had my eye on is so friendly he is my only chick that wants to
be a lap chicken. I guess I will have to hatch some more dorkings.
