I won't link you to the video. I think it's already had far too much publicity.
The video is of a man who keeps hens, describes himself as a homesteader and is complaining that his hens aren't laying any eggs ( well 3 eggs to be correct out of 40 (I think) hens) and nor are some (?) of the hens of other homesteaders he knows. I think the main point of concern was according to this man his hens laid as normal on day X and on day Y they stopped altogether, apart from the 3 who did lay and are pullets.
The medium this video has been publishe on is Tik Tok and on the page of this mans videos are links to other websites.
I've got some questions.
If my hens stopped laying eggs suddenly would I immediately assume that something had been done to the commercial feed I give them to make them stop laying eggs?
I know a bit about chickens, certainly enough experience to know that at a particular time of year they can stop laying eggs. It's usually late autumn but can happen at other times. Some years a few stop. Other years most stop. Sometimes the stopping bit happens over a few weeks.
If the above didn't alliviate my anxiety I would wonder if something had seriously stressed them.
Perhaps I would consider a sickness of some sort.
My most likely course of action, because I know hens can and do do this gone on strike business would be to wait the strikers out and swear at them a bit.
I do this because in the past, quite a few years of it, waiting the hens out has worked and out of the blue they start laying again. I could of course put this down to divine intervention and make a video about that.
So this homesteading man with the chickens, doesn't he know this happens from experience?
I know there are lots of posts on BYC where usually new keepers post that there hens have stopped laying. Up until now at least those who answer such posts haven't immediately written that something had been added to the feed to make them stop laying.
So, here's a start. I don't think the guy in the video does keep chickens. Every experienced keeper know they stop laying. I think it's click bait which for some reason I canot fathom has gone viral and every conspiracy theorists with an internet connection has jumped on board.
So there's another conspiracy for people to think about. Why does a man who says he keeps chickens not know they aren't machines and do stop laying make such a video. Check out some of the links on the page.
