I'm sick of the coons!!!

after loosing alot of birds this spring- first time in three years- we began rotating our dogs, they are big dogs, so one is roaming during the day, the other at night- it took some working with them to understand when the chickens are out, they are to be protected- but they have managed to keep most of them away, don't know if they are deterring flying threats though- but we live on ten acres and haven't lost any more

A Great Pyreneese or two will take care of everything! I use to loose birds to coyotes, foxes, bobcats, coons, opossums, skunks, hawks, owles, ect until a pair of Pyreneese. No mor traps, baits or running out in the middle of the night with a gun and light!

Sorry about the Coon's, I had a similar problems with Coon's busting into my back porch. They would break the screen on the door and the regular openings. So one night I camped out in the back of my truck with the tail gate down, and covered myself with a large brown blanket and waited until they all showed up. At first there was just one, then 5 minutes later another and so on. I had my 12 gauge pump loaded with 00 buck, and waited until one shot would kill at least 2, was able to get 3 of the five. I have not had a coon problem since. They are smart and learn very quickly. You can shoot all the opossums you want and they will just keep coming, but not a coon.

I am a new egg, just finished my coop and I am looking for some chickens. Hope I don't have the same problem

Tomorrow is my day off so i'm thinking about setting all my foothold traps tonight, baiting, and camping out on the roof. The last straw for me was this morning when i had my button quail in a small pet taxi that was up on my front door step get killed and the taxi drug off into the driveway. I actually don't even know how the coon reached through the wire since its only 1'' holes. Granted next time i will be keeping them at a higher altitude possibly indoors somewhere next time. And for the rest of the deaths, those were all break-ins that probably could have been prevented. I also went and got 2 live traps a second ago from a friend that i plan on setting just for good measure.

Go electric fence! Done right and it will turn most anything away, up to and including a bear (their nose is tender and they really move out on contact!

try using chicken livers and hearts. you can even try chicken gizards. dont get anything that is already cooked though it needs to be raw like the kind that you would get if you were going to cook it yourself. you will catch coons, foxes, opossums, skunks,and pretty much any other problem critter that you can think of if they are around
