Hello Everyone,

I'm fairly new to raising chickens. We've only had them for a little over a year now.

It all started when someone dumped two hens at the end of our driveway. Of course we rescued them, built them a coop and enclosure and started on our journey to learn as much as we could to make them safe, happy and healthy.

We now have a much bigger enclosure, three coops, and 11 chickens, all friendly breeds: 10 hens and one that turned out to be a rooster. He's a nice guy - a Barred Cochin.

We have two Columbian Wyandottes, two Specked Sussex, two Barred Cochin, two Americana, one Buff Orpington, and the two that were dropped at our driveway are a Maran and an Australop. All but the first two hens, we raised from babies.

Funny thing is that I've wanted chickens for years, but my husband was reluctant. When the two arrived on our driveway he fell instantly in love with them and the rest is history as they say.

We live on two and a half acres in the foothills of the Sierra, so we get to enjoy the wildlife here, which we love. We also have three feral cats that call our place home. We're working on establishing their friendship, and two indoor Ragdoll cats. Of course living in an area with wildlife comes with extra responsibility to keep our chickens safe. We tried to build everything using all the safety precautions we read about. So far so good.

But we are still novices and need help from time to time. To that end, I've been reading your forum all year. All of you are a big help, so now I'm joining and hoping for answers to some perplexing questions. Thank you in advance. Speaking for my husband and myself, we're happy to join your community.

BYC WELCOMES YOU!!!!
