In 4 hours I have to represent our group (trying to bring backyard hens to our city) at a meeting at city hall. The meeting is about urban agriculture planning and involves 'interested groups'. I have never in my life had to speak for a group like this and I"m pretty nervous. Tummy butterflies and all that. I can't concentrate at work. I have a prepared intro to read if called upon - other than that what should I do to prepare? We weren't sent an agenda. I am HORRIBLE at public speaking. Gah, I wish someone else had been available!!

You'll do fine. Just remember to breath and if you can, pick out a friendly face to talk to. They say it's best to look around at your audiance while you speak, but for the first time I wouldn't worry too much about that, just pick a friendly face and remember how much you want this and how reasonable your points are. It always helps me to go over possible objections to my arguments before speaking so I'm confident I can address them quickly.

for a succesful presentation.

Write out just what you want to say, keep your finger on the line you're reading so you won't lose your place. Stick to the script as much as you can so you get your message out without a lot of extra info that isn't needed. If you have to just read it that's fine. I would rather someone read the info clearly than try to wing it and wander all around. They know you are not a public speaker and won't expect you to be. It's not about your performance....it's about your message. Focus on just conveying the message. Good luck, you'll be just fine.

2 1/2 more hours! Yikes!! Reading it is a good idea. A very good idea. I just wish I'd gotten an agenda and had some idea what to expect!!!

It doesn't matter if you are nervous, even if people can tell. They will know you are just a regular person, standing up for what you believe in. Good for you for going out of your comfort zone to bring progress to your community.
