There were no calculators, you had to do your math homework in your head or on paper.

I remember having the operator make long distance calls for you.
The phone bill had a section for your long distance calls, and were charged by the minute, 10-25 cents, depending on the LD plan you signed up for. It's why minute timers often sat next to the telephone. I can't remember if LD was just to a different area code, or even to the next town over.
Oh, and getting collect calls all the time, because not everyone had a phone, so they'd borrow the neighbor's or use a pay phone.
