I'm so old I Remember when:

I'm so old I remember when schools had home ec classes. One semester was cooking and the second semester was split into sewing and wood working. Mandatory for everyone.

I hear they're making a comeback now because there are so many young adults with few basic life skills.

There was definitely no wood working in home ec classes here when I was in school. Wasn't mandatory either.
Here most girls took home ec and most boys took shop. That would never fly in today's sideways world.
Home ec then was kind of like trying to prepare you to be a housewife. Too many see that as a bad thing nowadays and even if not it's not the same role as it was in the Leave it to Beaver days.
Modernize it, call it life skills class and maybe some of these offspring will move out before they're in their 30s.

It's getting better. I teach high school in the Bronx, and the boys here like to cook. They see it as something they'll need in life.

The bigger problem is "safety." The kids can't even do labs in science because of using chemicals or fire or glass. No way we could have ovens or knives.

We had Agricultural which everyone called Ag class. Ag included shop where you learned basic woodworking, electrical, welding, small engine repair etc.. And, the girls had Home Economics. Some guys would take Home Economics but mostly to get to hang out with the girls.
Some in Ag. Class would join FFA which you were encouraged to do. Girls in Home Ec. would join FHA (Future Homemakers of American) which I understand in 1999 changed its name to FCCLA (Family, Career and Community Leaders of America)
I don’t think too many schools still have either class. They should, though.
