My 9 & 10 month old Great Pyrenees girls killed a coyote!!!

DH found it yesterday in the back pasture. We don't know for sure how long ago they did this, it was starting to dry up.

I am so proud of them! They do not want to stay with the goats or sheep much & I was worried about them not tending to their job very well. One lays with them at night, but is never with them during the day.

I know they are still young, but I had a 8 week old pup that we lost to whipworms that stayed with the animals 24/7.

I don't think I mentioned it on this forum, but coyotes killed all of our goats & all but 2 sheep last winter & early this Spring. We had emus & a donkey, but they still got them.

We have been replacing sheep & goats, but the sheep had been about a 10 year selective breeding program that DH had been working on. He had finally gotten the ewes that he wanted to keep & breed when this started happening.
Now he is starting over again.
These were Jacob Four Horn sheep.

Anyway...I am so proud of my pups!!! They are doing their job, just doing it their way!

Good dogs you've got there Jean. But I have to ask you something. You mentioned that you had emus and a donkey running with your herd, but I thought that mules were actually the animal of choice when it comes to protecting a herd from predators, like Coyotes and Cougars. You certainly live closer to it than I do so I'm curious to know if donkeys are actually better suited for guarding the herd. I heard that emus were great too. Sounds like you've got your dogs tuned in to their job now though so this is probably a moot point.

Our experience with the emus as protection are not that good. We recently lost an emu to either dogs or coyotes, not sure which.
Our emus would only chase a dog if it was cornered, otherwise they would run away.

Donkeys can be good, but they have to hate dogs with a passion in order for them to work as protectors, & then sometimes won't do anything unless it is after them.
When our donkey had a foal with her, she was wonderful. But we didn't keep a jack to keep breeding her, we had one but with 2 stallions here & a jack, it was too much trouble keeping them away from the mares the way our pastures are set up.

DH had tried llama's also with not much luck. The first one was great, but the second one was so mean it was hard to tend to the animals because of him.

Pry need fences, or they will claim a territory to protect larger than you want them to. They prefer large areas to patrol.
This is what was told to me by the breeder I get my pups from.
