So yeah, he's a rooster. I was told at the feed store there wouldn't be one and now I don't know what to do. He's a a beautiful sweet Easter egger. Is it possible to de-crow a rooster? I cannot have a rooster as I live in the Los Angeles area. If it's not possible to keep him are there rescues or any possibilities of finding a free range farm? At any rate, I know very little about how to resolve this so any information would be greatly appreciated.

My feed store will take back the mis-sexed ones and put them in a cage for other patrons to take home, so you could ask your feed store before you try other ideas. Vent sexing at the hatchery is only 95% accurate at best, so this sort of thing happens.

You could also Craigslist him or give him to your local shelter (I have a friend that has given 2 roosters to our local HS). Ask friends of friends if they know of anyone in the country that needs a rooster. An EE may be more desirable than the average becasue of the possibility of getting chicks that lay colored eggs.

And no, its not possible to de-crow a rooster. I don't know how strict your city is with enforcement or how noisy your rooster is. I visit another friend and she knows there is someone on her neighborhood who has a rooster (not legal) becasue she hears him crowing. You may be able to fly under the radar if you have easy-going neighbors.

Hi, thanks for all your advice. I put up signs at the feed store, and no luck yet. Is there a place to list this rooster here? I think I'm going to try Craigslist tomorrow. I'm just dreading it since there are so many people that cockfight around LA, ugh.

There is a buy-sell-trade section at BYC, but I've never used it so I don't know how it works.

If you do CL I have heard that you get better results if you post a photo of the roo. You could also call your local Humane Society and see if they will take in roosters and check if there are any animal sanctuaries or rescues that will take him.

Oooohhh.....He is VERY handsome! You will have no trouble re-homing him! I know the disappointment though when the Juvie hens start to crow instead of "baak". Had that happen to me this week. :-( So sad for you, but I don't think you'll have much trouble finding him a good home.

I've tried feed stores in the area and Craigslist, also word of mouth. I haven't had any takers, and he's getting loud. I'm running out of ideas. I am keeping my fingers crossed.

Try calling 4-H groups...we took ours to an Amish family. Google fresh eggs and see if you can find a farmer that would take him.
