I'm so sad my hen Has been crowing. : (

I found a few egg farms nearby, is there a way to find out how ethical these places are?

Can you try contacting the local vet offices, or even the animal shelter if you get REALLY desperate. I adopted a hen from an animal shelter once. She was being picked on severely by the other chickens and they almost killed her so the people gave her up. She lived in the office at the animal shelter in a dog cage. They let her roam around and she would dust bathe in the cat's litter box, who also roamed the office.

She would do the double footed scratch on the rug and perch on top of a cat tree. I went there to see her and it was just hysterical how funny she was!

This was the day I brought her home. She was so used to being an inside chicken, so I let her stay on my mud porch.

So you could try the animal shelters in your area if you can't find anywhere else for him to go. They would be more likely to take him, if you left a 50 lb. bag of feed for him.

I would post on here first. That way you are likely to find him a really nice home. Keep in mind that there are many roosters needing to be rehomed and more often than not, especially CL, these roosters are taken for meat. Egg farms normally do not keep roosters, they just aren't needed or necessary. I hope you can find a good home for him, he is really gorgeous!

I've read on BYC that many capons DO crow, although typically softer. You will likely have an easier time finding him a new home than finding someone to caponize him, especially if you want him anesthetized. The majority of capons are produced with no anesthesia, so that would be something you would need to be ok with as well.

I hate to bring this up, but have you considered either eating him or euthanizing him? I don't mean to sound cruel, but if cockfighting is as prevalent as it seems in LA I would be very, very hesitant to sell him on CL, as that's likely where he's going to end up- as training bait.

Have you posted anything in the Suthern California forum? Maybe some luck there, especially if you can drive out of LA a bit. He's gorgeous by the way, I had the same thing happen and I'm defiantly keeping my guy, he's just amazing looking. BTW, you could do what I did and move out of So Cal to North Idaho. I can have all the roos I want here!

I have considered it yes. I couldn't do it myself. I might have a friend that possibly would. I will look into it as an option if I have to.

I do worry he could be abused, I'm hoping to find someone that would not. :(

Castrating him is best done at a fairly young age and many people still lose them during the operation. Now that you have 20 posts you can use the BST section to find him a great home. I know it can be very hard rehoming your pets but I hope you can find him a great home
