Hi Everyone,

Happy Fourth! Unfortunately, I recently discovered a significant theft from my garage, after I underwent a mild heart attack, followed by two weeks in the hospital, and then another week at home with a visiting healthcare nurse. Although it has absolutely nothing to do with this site, I am hoping that some of you may have undergone such a devastating experience, and may be able to advise me as to just what to expect.

I lost 52 fishing rods and reels, (I own five boats and have a waterfront home,) seven loaded tackle boxes, and several electronic units, (fish finders, depth finders, ship-to-shore radio, electric trolling motor, and two deep-cycle batteries, as well as a Humminbird 788ci combo chart-plotter.) My home is valued at $258,000 dollars, I have excellent insurance, have never had a claim, and replacement cost on contents. My question is, will they take depreciation on the stolen items? I am doing my best to compile a list from memory, but at the age of 58, that's not necessarily the easiest thing to do.

Again, I apologize for technically "violating" the rules of this site, but I have come to think of you as friends, and especially since it's the Fourth, I have nowhere else to turn until Monday. Any help or advice you could offer would be greatly appreciated...

I'm so sorry this has all happened to you. That is terrible.

I'm wondering if you would get more help if this was in the Random Ramblings section? I'll report this to a moderator and see if they can move it for you. I'm sorry I don't have any answers for you.

I hope you continue to heal and that all of this works out for you. I'm sure others will be more help.

I'm so sorry that after going through such health issues you come home to find you have been burglarized.

By the way you really are not violating the rules of the site, but most members post non chicken related things in different sections of the forum. I wanted to respond even though I really don't have direct experience with this. I figure if I reply, your thread is less likely to get lost in the shuffle and some one else will see it who may know more.

I think I have heard that insurance companies reimburse roughly at replacement cost, but I am not sure if they factor in some depreciation. I wonder if they have a web site that you can explore over the weekend that has some information. I would think that you would want to report the crime to the police as well, even though it is unlikely that they will recover your property.

Despite the recent stress, I hope you enjoy the holiday weekend. Happy Fourth of July.

Hi,

Of course, I reported the theft to the police as soon as I discovered it. Since I live in a semi-rural area, the Michigan State Police handled my report. The first words out of the responding officer's mouth were, "Do you have any receipts?." I was incredulous..."Receipts?...You expect me to have receipts for items I've been purchasing since I was 12 years old?!...Are you crazy?!..."

Since I have NEVER had a theft claim, (And I'm 58 years-old,) I'm in un-charted waters here, and just simply don't know what to expect. All I do know is that I MUST submit a very "specific", (As I've been told,) itemized list of ALL of the missing items prior to July 11th. And believe me, it's not easy...

Thank you for your comments and kind assistance,

My ex had fishing items and other things stolen from a storage area. I believe he received monies to replace it at today's value. Sorry it happened.

Pictures help alot. Anyones showing your items, they will help remember items you didnt even know you had! Simply ones of fishing trips, just anything showing what you had. Dont have much advice other than that. Good luck to you and i am so sorry it happened. Oh and thank you for your service to the country!

I would also look on Craig's List or Ebay for some of your missing items. A lot of times these thieves try to sell what they've stolen. I am so sorry this happened to you. It's the last thing a guy needs on top of the health issues you're dealing with.

And, thank you, sir, for your service to our country.

My guess, it would come down to reading your insurance
policy and see what it covers.

Different companies, different limits.

I had a garage broken into years ago and my insurance
company paid off quite well. No proof needed other than
a police report. I mean, who has all the receipts from a
lifetime?

*You're quite heavy on fishing equipment. I'm way heavy
on tools...big time garage, we were into showcars hard. My
agent tried saying I owned more tools than a normal person.
As I told him, (he was also president of the old car club here)
"You show cars with me. You've been in my garage. You know
I own way too many tools." He hemmed and hawed, and paid
off big money. After the fact, the insurance company made me
carry a rider on my tools.

Spook
