i'm starting my chickens on nipple waterers and have questions

It would make sure they are drinking fresh water rather than from the nasty old bowl that for some reason no matter how often I clean it, is just gross. Now, how to hang it and where. *ponders*

I made an L out of 2x4 bolted it to a tree upside down then added a cross support and hook then walla hanging waterer. yaya.

another reason i wanted to get rid of my ground waterers other than they are dirty and nasty. was that my cats kept drinking out of them and i dont like them that comfortable with my chickens i was worried about them thinking of them as food.

oh good idea. my cats were drinking out of those type too but they were just sitting out not by the chickens. LOL

I didn't hang mine. Since it has horizontal nipples on the sides of the bucket, I was able to set it up on a couple of bricks so they don't have to contort themselves to get a drink. With it sitting on bricks, I can periodically move it to another spot if I need or want to without worrying about rigging another hanger. Also in the winter I can use light bulb setup to keep the water from freezing by putting a small watt bulb inside the bricks, under the bucket. The vertical nipples in the small auxiliary waterer only allow for hanging that one so it's suspended on a chain from a rafter, but that one will come out come winter so I don't have excess humidity to worry about..

I got 50 vertical nipples for $10 on amazon. That solved my water issue for all my chickens now and the ones yet to come and I don't mind switching waterers in the winter. the math is sound too 5 nipples =$1 5gal $2.50 5gal lid i think was $1 so total $4.50 to water 15 chickens. But i do like having extra waters per chicken like i have 2 waters out which is good for 30 chickens but i only 18 out and about now.

edited to change horizontal to vertical

GreenDragon can you please post or PM me the link to these 50 horizontal nipples for $10? It's much more expensive than that everywhere else I look. Thanks.

I'm pretty sure those are vertical nipples, Amazon does not sell the horizontal ones. I got my horizontal ones from eBay, I think, and you are right, they are are a lot mote expensive. I believe only 1 company (Solway) makes the horizontal ones, but (apparently) many companies in China are making (or at least reselling) the vertical ones, so they have gotten very cheap.

My plans are to put a pipe system into my outdoor runs for the vertical nipples and other types of waterers inside the coop for winter or just as a backup. I've never completely trusted the nipples as a sole source of water, but my birds seem reluctant to go inside on most days, so having a source of water out there would be welcome.

I have a hanging bucket with four nipples, and I was wondering: if I put a birdbath heater in the bucket in the winter, will the nipples still be usable?

I use vertical nipples in the bottom of a bucket and wrapped heat tape around the bucket. The water doesn't freeze and the nipples have stayed working into single digits below zero. I've only used it one season but so far so good.
