I have a hen that seems to have an impacted crop. She’s completely lethargic, eyes closed. I’ve massaged her crop sever times today but there’s no way she’s taking any oil to help. She seems to far gone to hold upside down. Should I just put her down or is there anything that can be done?

Sorry for your loss. She may have had the problem for awhile and was dehydrated and starving because her crop was not working. Since you put her out of her misery, you might want to do a home necropsy to look for any problems in her organs that might have lead to the impacted and sour crop. Sometimes it is long grasses or other material clogging the crop, but a reproductive disorder, worm load, or obstruction could also be a cause. Most state vets will offer necropsy if you want to find a cause of death. The body needs to be refrigerated, but not frozen.

Thanks. I did not see anything unusual in her crop. Nothing with organs looked off. No odd smell. She was a good layer…had lots of yolks ready to go in her. Sad.

I’ve done necropsies before with sick chickens but I decided just to process her since it seemed her demise was not related to an illness.
