Hi everyone,

My silkie FINALLY hatched one healthy chick after several failures. But I noticed yesterday that it had this lump on it's chest that seemed to be getting larger. Ignorant soul that I am, I just knew I had a peep with a tumor, but my friend told me it was it's crop.

I was afraid it was impacted because it was very distended and hard, so I followed the prodecure on a site someone here recommended and inserted a small bit of oil into the drop and massaged just in case it was impacted.

This was probably recommeded for an older chicken. Do you think I could have done some harm? If I hurt my one and only peep, I'll just die ! But she seemed OK.

thanks, TJ

Hmmm... the crop can get pretty large in a chick as they eat, but that doesn't necessarily mean impacted.

If you could post a pic, that might help.

Hi Arlee, I wondered if it maybe normal, but I can't remember by first chicks having such a large lump under their neck. Gee, I hope I didn't do anything to hurt her. she seemed fine and I only massaged her a few minutes very gently. It seemed to be softer and somewhat smaller afterwards. I don't have a pic, and not very good at posting one anyway.
