Impacted Crop - Need some guidance

I have a hen that I think may have impacted crop; however, there may be something else causing her digestive system to shut down. Saturday she was lethargic and did not show interest in eating, just laid in front of waterer and drank a lot of water. She even slept in a nest box about an hour, came out cackling. She did roost Saturday night as well. So I assumed she was having an off day (she has those, see this prior thread about the same hen: https://www.backyardchickens.com/threads/lash-egg-or-something-else-help.1667811/)

Yesterday, she laid around as well, so I checked her in the morning and her crop was VERY full and kind of hard. I thought maybe impacted crop, so i isolated her and with held food. She is still drinking but otherwise just sleeping. Very watery, yellowish droppings. This morning really no change. I have been following guidance for impacted crop here: https://www.backyardchickens.com/ar...ne-youre-dealing-with.73607/?page=11#comments

I am concerned something else is causing digestive failure. Any guidance/advice is appreciated. Nearest avian vet is about an hour and a half away and today is a holiday. Thankful in advance!!

Sorry to hear about your chicken. How is she doing today? Was her crop flat this morning by chance? What kind of chicken is she and how old?

A lot of times crop issues and reproductive issues do go hand in hand. If she’s been having reproductive issues, it could be what is slowing her digestion down. In the event that her crop is truly impacted, she would benefit from crop massages and some coconut oil to nibble on before the massage. If her crop has gone sour, or it seems like it may be headed that direction because it hasn’t emptied in a few days, you could try a course of miconazole treatment.

Thank you for your reply. I am sorry for my delayed response as well. I had a feeling that it was her other issues that ultimately caused her digestive system to shut down. Sadly she did not make it, she died last night. But I was with her in her final moments. I am always sad when I lose one, but this one really hurt since she was a favorite. RIP Flop, nest in peace. 😔❤️❤️🐔Thank you again for taking the time to reply.

I’m so very sorry. She was a beautiful little lady. Fly high sweet Flop. She’ll be waiting for you at that big coop in the sky.

I had one pass very similarly. It’s tough to watch because there isn’t much you can really do about these circumstances. Reproductive issues are so messy in chickens. Be at peace knowing she passed in the comfort of your touch :hugs

Thank you for your sweet comment. I’m sorry to hear you lost one to similar issues. Such a helpless feeling watching them go. I just held her. I know she isn’t suffering anymore but definitely miss her. Passing out treats is not the same. She was always first in line! Thank you again :hugs
