Impacted gizzard?? PLEASE see my post on page 3

Do not give this chicken Wazine or Ivermectin unless the vet prescribes those medicines. The vet determined that Panacur was the worm medicine that was needed for this hen.

Follow your vets directions and if you have further questions, call your vet.

In response to some replies:

Did ask about the gizzard issue- the vet didn't know what to do to correct it other than the electrolytes and trying to get her to eat. The vet DID say that she thought the impaction could be one or a combo of things: long grass from the yard (not likely given we try to keep the grass short), too much grit, or that she's eating the bedding.

I think its either the bedding or the grit. I've been withholding grit the last few days. I HAVE noticed that ALL my birds have been eating the bedding, sometimes instead of eating food. I have no idea why!! I know they must be hungry because their crops are empty or only half full.

The update:

All my birds have come down with the same symptoms as her, but not to the same degree. We are still waiting on the fecal results but the vet did manage to send the xrays and symptoms to the local vet university. The professors there said their symptoms sounded like coccidiosis.

The vet told me to stop the antiworming and Flagyl and start them on something for cocci. I dont remember what name brand drug she suggested but I had Sulfed on hand; she said that would be fine to use.

So, its been two days since starting the cocci treatment and still giving them Vi-Tal (an electrolyte, vitamin and mineral supplement). No more bloody poops and intestinal lining in only one of the chickens. (and with her its just a little and not often so shes getting better)

The questions/concerns I have now are these:

1. Their poop is still not normal colored and has an odd smell to it. The color ranges from forest green to grass green. They all have those colors whether they've eaten lettuce/grass or not so i dont think its a metter of what theyre eating. Does anyone know what this could be from??

2. Why would they be eating their bedding?? Is it from a vitamin defeciency of some kind?? I know they're ingesting it because I see them doing it. And they eat a decent amount while I'm watching, which is 10-30 minutes at a time so who knows how much they eat when I'm NOT watching. I'm worried that theynwill impact their gizzards like the chicken I took to the vet, if their gizzards aren't ALREADY impacted.

I'm tempted to cover their coop floor with paper towels.
