improving my coop

thank you- i actually didnt see this until now and put a large stick from my yard in as a roost.

what would the benefits of using the 2x4 be? Would it collect poop or is it more comfortable?

I'm going on it again next weekend (finish painting) and could do a quick swap if the benefits are worthwhile

The only benefits I have heard are that it allows them to fully cover their feet with feathers and prevent frostbite in colder climates. Personally I don't think it matters. My grandfather had game fowl (light birds, fewer feathers) in New England and only had branch type roosts. Was never a problem for him.,

I'll probably just stick to the roost i put in there then since it's already installed and they seem to like it.

I think raising the roof was very good advice. its only been 3 days but i can tell my little ones are very happy. I can see their silhouettes through the front in the new upper level and they just look so happy in there.

Cool Beans, Congrats!

Can you post a pic?

The branch might work for now, but when they get full grown large fowl will be much more comfortable on the wide side of a 2x4, so just keep it in mind.

I can do that. I definitely am questioning my roost placement. i have a hanging feeder in there and I don't want them to poop in it. for 6 chickens, do I need more than nesting box? Will take photos today- it isnt completely finished but you will see the updates

I have another question too. I am so sorry to be such a bother this is my first flock/coop and i want my chickens to be happy.

You may notice the heat lamp. It doesnt get cold enough here in western washington to need it for heat. I've been using it to DRY out the coop to keep it from molding! What a pain. Clearly this is a ventilation issue (too much and/or in the wrong spots. What is the rule for coop vents? all 4 sides?

I may be wrong, but judging the open screened areas it looks like you have more than enough ventilation. Is water spraying in there when it rains?
