Those 250 red heat lamps are intended for out side brooder use or place that have mass numbers of chicks.
NOT the small time chicken owner.

Go to the store Buy some regular yellow bug light bulbs.

I use 100 watt then then a 60 watt then a 40 watt over time.

Welcome! I have a 250 watt red heat bulb but it is raised to about 10" above the top of the brooder, which is about 3 feet above the chicks...they are happy and everywhere...they are sleeping under it....temp is about 90 degrees directly below the lamp. Try raising the lamp and cooling it off a little for them...do it a couple inches at a time.
