My one girl was attacked by a hawk this week. I keep replaying what I could’ve done to help her - wishing I went outside. We found her lifeless in the woods not far from where her feathers were. More than likely it happened shortly before we found her because my rooster was running around angry. She was still warm, completely unresponsive, comb seemed a little darker than usual, fluid was coming from her mouth, flies were already flying on her. I wish we would have just kept her a little longer, not knowing how soon after the event took place that we found her. Although my friend says she was deceased. I can’t help but think maybe she was just in shock.
I hate the idea of her, possibly getting buried if she was still living. At the time I tried to feel for a heartbeat, and I could not feel anything nor could I feel her breathing. I held my one chicken today, and to be honest, I could not feel her heartbeat either. So now I’m second-guessing everything. 😞

I’m sorry for your loss. It sounds to me like your chicken was dead by the liquid coming out of the crop and beak, dark comb, flies on her, and her not breathing. She was gone, I am sure, so don’t beat yourself up.

I agree. A chicken in shock, IME, will sit there, panting and looking dazed. Even one that typically runs from you will let you pick her up without protest, as if they don't know what's going on. Your hen, I'm sorry to say, was dead. You did not bury her alive. I'm so sorry for your loss. :hugs
