"In the know"

lol...yeah I must admit to being "stuck" on em for sure (though you err in thinking I am some kind of expert on silkies...most are into the breeding of them and my knowledge of genetics is severely lacking)

I have had BO, RIRs, BSLs, mystery chicks and a Light Sussex...all these have become tame and friendly. All enjoy being stroked and cuddled, and none of them object to being held.

I think most breeds of chickens can become 'nice and tame,' especially if you spend a lot of time around them. One of my BSL hens was terrified of me for years, then suddenly it twigged that i was not 'out to get her,' and now she will fly onto my lap when i sit with them in their coop

I used to have one A-lorp hen, Hazel, that would always be underfoot until I picked her up and stroked her back. Then she would take off, back to the flock. The whole thing was her, though - I didn't start it.

For their part, the rest of the group kept a wide distance between us. So have nearly all of the chickens I've ever had. Whether I hand fed them, cuddled and tried to "bond" with them or not, that is how it ends up. So I reckon it's more their nature to be aloof, than all warm a fuzzy.

personally, I have had RIR, Astrolops, and Americauna's, the latter being my favorite. Although I have never had a bad chicken, they are what you make them. Keeping your hands near them, finding a fav food, such as grapes for mine- we call them chicken candy. Twice a week they recieve some grapes, never their fill of them, and I make them eat out of my hand every day, grapes, whole grains, even bread. I feel that giving them assortments of veggies and even cooked meats it keeps them looking for you and a treat, this keeps them friendly and open to you as Papa.

I got the rare breed layer collection from Mcmurry hatchery..

I figured for my first time at chickens I didnt know what I wanted so I got an assortment. I absolutly LOVE THEM ALL.. they all have a different personality and they are all just so much fun to be around.

If you cant decide on a breed most hatcheries sell assortments.
