That thought had crossed my mind ~ except with all the the wild critters around here we would have unwelcome guests!
There is a kind of pet door where the pet wears a special collar that unlocks the door. Only the animal wearing that collar can get in.
I have an electronic pet door for that exact reason: too many critters might come a'visiting. Both dogs and my cat wear collars with UltrSonic emitters to activate the door.
I have VERY smart chickens and knew it would be necessary if only to keep them out. I've seen the ducks and geese eyeing it, too. Some come up the ramp and tap at the clear-ish panel.
Pricey. But well worth it.
With my luck the dogs would bring in the wild critters. I had a cat bring in a live frog he caught in our pond and let it go in the living room. I was crawling around trying to get the frog from under the couch while my hubby was laughing!
Three is plenty!
But you have little ones ~ I have 2 German Shepherds and a beagle!
