During the height of summer about 60,000 ~ they will reduce the population to about 20,000 for the winter.

You got it the first time ~ fewer eggs and workers only live about 35 to 45 days in the summer so there are always some not coming home.

Also the males (drones) which make up less than 10% of the hive in the summer are kicked out before winter. They serve one purpose ~ to mate with the queen & there is none of that happening in the winter so they are excess baggage and disposed of.
