What a beautiful flower Cynthia! I know it smells divine!
They love that sweet nectar as the bud is about to open. There is an old wives tale that says the ants help it open. No, they just love that sweet stuff. If you want to take the flower in, just shake it off before you do. They don't hurt the flower either. Not like those earwigs! I have been lucky and only see the ants. Those earwigs have been eating my marigolds. Marigolds! They don't smell sweet. Not sure why they like them, the leaf part, not the flower part. Stripped leaves off of three different ones I planted. :/Looks like bike wheels on a truck. That is a bent rim waiting to happen the way I drive.
Married men that tell tales don't live long enough.....I never put any stock in that old wive's tale re: ants help peonies open. BTW are there any old husbands tales?
