I recently finally finished knitting myself a pair of pants to lounge around the house in and wear outside when shoveling snow. I wasn't sure they'd be warm (they're not wool cause it's itchy) but it's 17F outside and they were. I didn't have a pattern, just pictures of similar online and lots of time. It took a while cause have some arthritis, it can be slow going. I just kept measuring and trying them on till I got it right. Did in all one piece, no seams. They're super comfy too.

I love-love-love knitting cables. The problem used to be, I'd knit past my bedtime.

*Oh, I'll just turn this cable. Just a couple more rows/rounds. Oh, I'll just work to the next cable. Repeat from * until...

I would look at the clock... oooops. Stayed up way too late.

Given big enough needles and enough strength, someone might be able to knit WITH cable.

Cavey, look at the design that runs down the legs of those pants. That's called cable stitch. It sort of looks like rope... sort of?

You see them a lot in "fisherman knit" sweaters. That style originated in fishing communities. The different stitches had names, and significanes too. The cable represented the ropes the fishermen use.

The yarn used was undyed, handspun wool, with lots of the lanolin still in it. That made the sweater more waterproof. I've read that the sweater designs were usually unique to the family, and if a man was lost at sea and the body washed up, the sweater was one way they would identify him.

Someone who lives a few miles up the highway from me tried making a fence out of cable like that. Probably about seventy five yards long, maybe four strands. The weight of it kept pulling the corner posts out of the ground. They finally gave up. It's still there but looks terrible.
