increasing egg laying

So, to me this sounded crazy, but now I want to know!

I was talking to an old farmer this past week and he was telling me that in the winter time to help keep his hens laying eggs, he puts a little cheyenne (not sure that is spelled right?) pepper in their water. Is this true?? I am kinda new to all this. My babies aren't old enough to lay yet. only 12 weeks old now.

There is a thread about pepper to make them lay more.
Do a search. It was a few months ago and I think the final decision was that egg production DID go up slightly with the addition of pepper (peppered popcorn).
