incubated my own eggs for the first time

@Everlong, and whoever else might find this handy in the future

Unfortunately I didn't take a picture of it's foot and I couldn't find any similar pictures on the net either. If you place the back of your hand flat against the floor with the forearm at a 90 degree angle that's what my chick's foot looked like. And this is what it looks like now:

Missing a little fluff thanks to the plasters but other than that completely normal. I have no idea if it was the supplements (I'm giving them InterVits), the roughly 24 hours I kept its leg splinted or a bit of both. If this happened again I would try a few days with supplemented water before splinting.

This is what I used as the splint. I carefully covered it with tape to make sure the ends of the metal could not injure the chick. The long part held using plasters cut to size against the lower leg (tarsometatarsus) and the short end under the foot. Then I used more tape to give it a 'duck-foot', spreading and flattening the toes into the correct position. The chick took a while to get used to it's new attachment but it could eat, drink and follow it's siblings around (albeit with a bit of tumbling about) so seemed content enough to keep it on. I left it on over night and the next evening when I removed the plasters and tape (olive oil coated nail scissors helped a lot) it was walking completely normally.

This is a fiddly and time consuming method and the quail I used it on was otherwise healthy and active. I'd imagine treating multiple or weaken animals similarly would be far less feasible.

@Elza
I'm so sorry things didn't work out for you. I did read that having both feet curled can be a sign of either poor genetics or a lack of certain nutrients during development whereas a single foot is more likely to be a hatching injury. Hope you have better luck in the future.

(Noticed that i wrote 'chicken' in a previous comment when I meant chick. Moreover, I should have written Japanese quail to avoid any confusion.)
