Incubating And Setting Eggs By The Moon- Aug 27-28

I agree the moon has been really a sight to see lately,ha a microwave bator now that's a thought lol I want me a automatic egg turner
I'm hoping we all have a good hatch.

Last night I almost lost one of my americauna chicks, I had built them a new grow out pen and somehow a farrow cat broke part of the wire and took one,I heard cheering and went outside this was 5 am and seen my bird so grabbed it and thank god it was not hurt but was scared, it was a close call to say the least.

I had not had any preditor problems in a long time so I didn't think anything about putting my young chicks out in the same area as my big chickens, 3 very young I had w/ a broody mom and 11 young ones that I had in the area but not running w/ the big birds they were just to young, they had a fence just to keep them seperate from the big birds, I lost all 3 scaleless NN chicks w/ the broody mom, 2 houdans, 3 araucana to a hawk and a ferrel cat. Needless to say I learned my lesson about letting the babies live w/ the same protection as the adults. We sectioned off part of the coop and then put an extra pop door and a 10 X 16 fenced yard w/ a fenced top, this will be for any baby chicks or broody moms or breeding groups I want to keep seperate. They all share the same coop, but are still kept seperate.

Well it's a good thing you've taken extra precautions now, I would have been devastated to loose those chickens, I def. need to make me a more secure area but least now I'm not blind to the dangers around.

I candled all my eggs and about 14 were no good.... 2 had the ring of death, 3 started but quit soon after and the rest were clear, these were shipped eggs so I got about 17 left

Eggs are candled the carnage was bad, but not a total loss like I was expecting. I started w/ 30 eggs now I'm down to 12, of the 12 there are about 4 I gave the benefit of the doubt and let stay. The ones I am most wanting are the houdan and NN. I started w/ mostly NN and lost all but 5, 4 I saw moving for sure. I only have 1 araucana left and saw it move, the houdans I was most suprised about I started w/ 7 and only lost one that I was willing to admit was totally dead, I gave 3 the benefit of a doubt and even though I suspected they were likely not viable I let them stay, and saw 3 houdans moving!!!!!!!

Here is a pic of one of the little houdan chickie doos

This one was just a wiggling and a squirming up a storm in there.

Oooops sorry thought this was the other hatching thread.

Mine go to lock down tomorrow too. I haven't candled since day 10, I will probably candle right before lockdown tomorrow.

Hello and glad I found you guys and hoping I can join in. I have 5 fertile eggs under a broody Buff Orp. She is 16 months old and has gone broody 5 times already... it is getting old, but I wanted some more bantams so I took a fertile silkie egg and my neighbor gave me some d'uccle eggs and off we go! I put the silkie egg under the broody on the 27th and the others on the 29th. Here is to hoping all goes well.

Candled a few nights ago and they look ok.. hard to tell on small eggs.
