Incubating duck eggs

We also have about 40 duck eggs in the incubator, 20 cayugas and 20 anconas. We already had an automatic turner so the number of turns was not an issue to us. Humidity IS and we are using as our guide David Holderreads excellent book printed by Storey's called Raising Ducks. We have hatched out guineas before with a very high hatch rate but ducks are new to us. This book has an excellent guide that we are using and yes he suggests misting the eggs daily after day 7. One reason he lists for not candling until day 9 is how fragile the brand new embryo is at day 7 AND you may miss one at 7 that you would get at 9. Our Cayugas resulted in 17 out of 20 fertile and the Anconas 14 out of 20. We are trying to keep the humidity in the 50-55 % range although that is difficult in our small air circulated incubator. We keep it close is all I can say. If you can find a Google reference to David Holderread I would trust that one. Good luck and it will be interesting to compare notes!

Candled eggs...we've got 12 out of 15 that are developing nicely. Just checked the calendar and they should be ready to hatch on St. Patricks Day!! So excited! Just need to get the brooder set up this week, and then we'll be ready for babies!
That is so exiting. And such a good hatch rate. I loaded my homemade incubator yesterday, but at night it went 103F with 25% humidity, it was after 4 hours in incubator, so I am hoping that it did not kill the eggs.

did any of your eggs hatched yet? out of 10 of my eggs only one was fertilized, the rest no good, so I just have to wait and see. Still there is 15 more days to go.

I set 15 eggs, after the first week, we found that 3 didn't develop, so we only had 12 growing. Out of those 12, we have had 5 hatch, 4 more pipped, and lost 3 that had gone almost all the way. One even had internally pipped, but died before it could externally pip. So out of 12 eggs, we've got 9. Just waiting for the last 4 to hatch.

Good luck with your egg!

That is good, what breed those ducklings are? I do hope that my 1 egg will hatch, it will be such a disappointment for us if it will not hatch. Keep us posted and please some picture would be nice too.

They are Indian Runners. We've got 6 ducklings so far, with two more that have pipped. We think we've lost another one though. So out of 12 eggs incubated, we're most likely going to have 8 ducklings. I'll post pics soon, I just need to find the time to get the little guys out of the brooder for a minute so I can get a good shot.

That is still good ratio, but a bummer on the second pipping egg, did you help any of them to hatch? I hope my one egg will hatch, or else we going to have some unhappy kids here.

I only needed to assist one by keeping the membrane damp, it had started to dry out. Otherwise they all hatched themselves.
