Hello, is it a good idea to incubate eggs.
Also I have heard that some hens will take the chicks you hatch as their own.
Is that true?
Do hatching eggs yourself require more work?

It all depends on if you want chicks, 50-50 chance of having roosters.
Some broodies will adopt, some won't.
Hatching eggs by yourself will definitely be more work, the broody will do it all for you.

I love incubating and hatching my own chicks! I also love my broody hens! For a hen to accept chicks and raise them she would have to be broody before you try giving them to her. There is the VERY RARE exception where some hens will go into broody mode when they see chicks period. I wouldn't count on this though and the only really safe way to find out if you have a hen like this is if you're raising the chicks in an enclosure side by side with your flock and you see a hen showing interest and starting to make broody sounds like showing the chicks where the food is. I've had a ton of broody hens but so far even my very best proven broody hens have not done this unless the hormones hit first.
