One of my chicks looks like it's choking/gasping and the chirps don't sound right...I don't know what's wrong. I can't see anything in its throat. I'm scared. The brooder isn't too hot. They have baby grit. The food is small/crumbles...maybe he drank water and got a little down the wrong tube...do u think he will be ok? Can chickens cough water back up??? Help please!

No idea!! So sorry, good luck. :hugs

How old are they again (I forget when they hatched)? I don't think water "going down the wrong way" normally happens in a normal chick. Anything unusual about this chick's hatch?

Well, not to put too fine a point on it, but if you ended up with all boys, and didn't want to keep any, they are great as meat birds, between 12-16 weeks. Around here people sometimes raise them instead of Cornish Xs as broilers (if they can get the chicks) because they are easier to manage in the heat and taste better (so farmers charge a little more).
You're SOOOOOO not kidding... (no pun intended...) :D

get them those roo collars lol
good luck!!

It is a good opinion to have, but sometimes not possible

Thanks Liz - I do have no crow rooster collars on the loudest ones.  We started making our own, since we had SO MANY roosters.

i didnt say it was impossible, just not possible, like they are her pets and cares too much and would be too heartbroken to kill them

I am not a vegetarian, but if I see an animal alive, I don't want to eat THAT animal.  I can care for my chickens and happily eat a chicken I bought at the store and not blink, but they weren't MY chickens.  I'm about 90% there.  If someone else will kill them and gut them, I'll defeather than.  I think that's a fair trade!

Death is a part owning a pet.

Correct.

Yes, I know that all too well.

Thanks everyone!!

They will drive you crazy! EAT THEM!

I have a small pen they go into just out of brooder so that helps. I know I'll be getting more tomorrow as the broody hen only had 5 chicks and it's just as easy to raise 20 as it is 5[/quote

Your broody will just take on new chicks? What breed is she?

She would have except she died. I now have 5 chicks to raise so I thought of getting more. I was going to give her 5-8 more to raise for me. Most of the time if you add chicks to a hen after she has a few she will take them as well. I do that at night. She was one of my project birds.

This one hatched on Monday and was on day 20, and was completely healthy. It's sibling hatched a bit early on day 19, and its yolk sack wasn't fully absorbed, but its fine now...I'm not sure what happened.
