@bantychooks to help you feel better:)

Aww, thank you for the tag!! :hugs

You can see if she'll take them. What do you feed her?

Okay. I feed fermented all-flock feed, I sometimes use layer or grower for a week if the feed store does not have what I am looking for.

Is it always this empty in the morning?

It usually is; unless chaos starts trying to kidnap my ducks or sally gets here.

BTW, what is that thing in your avatar??

Never set chicks under a broody before, so I have a question:

After chicks hatch & mama lets them go exploring, do they have sense enough to get back into the chicken yard through the 2x4 welded wire fence when mama calls them?

Yes. They are smarter than you think!

Now Jace's chicks are too big to go through the fence. They now know where the gap under the fence is; and will go out AND back in through that hole. Chickens are not quite as stupid as many give them credit for!

What's the earliest that you all have successfully integrated your new chicks with older flock?  I have read so many different pages and articles on this, but just curious what your actual experiences are.

3 1/2 weeks, if I start them in the house. If I start them outside, I could get them out a bit sooner, I think.

Morning all! My internet was throwing fits, so it took me forever to get on here. :frow

what was the final tally ?
Since I whacked one last night there's 22 live ones.

That's a great question, that I don't have an answer for. I would imagine the temperament of the breed would effect the answer though.

Well, I have a bit of a strange adult flock left (I lost 7 this winter and 2 two weeks ago), my remaining flock consists of 5 hens only (in pecking order):
1 Rhode Island Red (2 years old)
1 Easter Egger (2 years old)
2 Dominique/Easter Egger crosses (1 year old)
1 Barred Rock (1 year old)

I have three 6 week old chicks I need to move out into the big girl run soon because my new chicks are due to hatch this weekend.

They have been outside in my chicken tractor where the big girls can see them while they are free ranging for the last three weeks, only one of the hens (Barred Rock) tries to peck at them through the wire still, I think out of curiosity.
