Just got a new t-shirt that reads, I'm not a gynecologist but I'll take a look. Can't wait to wear it.
LOL,
I've seen a few of those

I went to check my chicks that are between 6 to 12 weeks old. I found 3 or 4 like this.

I am guessing mites. Sevin? Or something like that...what's the name of the dust I need to use? I tossed one into another pen, but didn't notice the feather loss until after I let go. I need to treat ALL of my pens, correct?
food grade DE mixed in their dust bath, and ash mixed in too

No, I saw no bugs, but it felt sandy or crumbly like. I've never seen that much feather loss before.
the sandy stuff is probably a pretty good indication

Mine get ugly and coop looks like a broken feather bed. Well not that bad but almost. You should see bugs. Try magnifying a spot and see. Usually can see without. Do they have access to dirt for dust bath. Also if you have access to oak ash to put in dust bath that will help if it is mites.

when did you turn into a sheep?

I may go out now that it's dark and see if I can see any creepy crawly stuff....this looks like bugs to me, not a normal molt
I'll check tonight, but will check again in the morning to see if I can see more evidence.

These are all 6 week to 12 week old babies. They are still upstairs in the coop. I've been grabbing the older ones and dropping them into the lower pen that does have access to dirt. I will move all these babies down into the lower pen after I treat them. I'll get them all outside.
Their coop is a bit nasty right now. I was supposed to clean it this week, but it's been so busy and way too hot, I fell behind. I'll box up these babies, treat them, clean their coop and treat that.

Thank you again everyone!!!

I still want to ask...this building has 4 pens. This is in the top left pen, no signs of damage in the bottom left, top right or bottom right. The bottom pens can go outside, the tops can not. Should I treat ALL 4 pens? Or do I just treat the pen that has these mites. For the bottom left, I dropped one of the mite bitten chicks in there. Will that spread the mites or do they just stay in the coop and only jump on the chicks to feed?

Thanks!! When I googled mites I came up with treating it with garlic and making a spray with cooking oil, and cinnamon and other stuff. The 'remedies" made me feel like I was trying to ward off vampires!!!

I am NOT, I repeat NOT, filling this bator. Knowing me, I'd get a 100% hatch rate and too many chicks!

I am already bursting at the seams with eggs. I get 8 eggs + per day, and have 6 POL pullets. I can't eat that many!

I give a lot to friends & family.

WOOOHOOOO!!!

Good morning all! Well I have 13!!! Eggs that still haven't hatched but I thought they looked like maybe they weren't all developing or at the same rate and I didn't check they were actually doing anything in 4 so I'm not sure what to do but I did open it to take them out and I put in new paper towels over the others because it's just so gross from the hatching and I like the chicks to hatch and not get covered in gunk and shell bits so we will see I will give them a few days. That's 19 that hatched over the last few days which I think puts 39 chicks in the raises brooder... So I should provably get on the selling a few of them lol. Mostly they're silver penciled rock x Sussex, white rock & buff orp but I can't tell 100% who's who. I will maybe post later and you guys can help me guess? I have to get them Out to clean out the brooder anyway so that's a good chance to snap a few photos & try and figure out who is who! I have hatched 3 that looked similar last hatch from the first few of these eggs and I have my assumptions lol.
are these the ones you thought you cooked??
cant wait for pictures!

Hi everyone!

-Kathy
GOOD MORNING!!!!
sorry about the giving up

Lol! I was referring to BYC, seems the threads have been infiltrated with youngsters all the sudden.
Yeah though, pulling out hair...DW has been pretty much stay at home mom for yrs, been working days since last fall, I work second, I've never had to deal with this. Getting them off to school was bad enough, I don't do pig tails, I don't do braids, I don't even comb my own hair...Now summer time, almost 4,6,8, monsters, animals, and 12 and 17 yr old that's no help at all...it's going to be a long summer, they should go to school year round!
AGREED, and start it younger

Quote: Dear RUNT,

Don’t waste someone’s time if you’re not going to do anything with their advice.

You have been given great advice for steps you need to take to get from point A to point B, which could be lifesaving for your chicks.

Your problem is you want a quick fix, you want someone else to solve your problem. Don't sit in front of the computer, hoping someone has the answers and do nothing more than that. We are here to assist you as best we can, we enjoy helping others, BUT we can not hold your hand and do this for you.

If you do ask for advice from anyone, the best thing you can do is to take action with all that you have learned, or google cocci yourself, and if you’re not even going to take time to say thanks after you get their advice, don’t even bother writing in the first place, it is basic manners.

I have learned much from this forum, and I also found that there are many types of people! One type is a breed in danger of extinction and are those who examine and analyze the advice given carefully, research for themselves as well, find out that it makes a whole lot of sense, and actually embrace it, act on it and are willing to share what their experiences are with others and AGAIN send thanks, and follow up later telling those people what you did and how it’s helped!

So take what you have learned about cocci, embrace it, research it and TAKE ACTION ON IT !
